    About The SEE

The Society of Environmental Engineers (SEE), is a professional Society which exists to promote awareness of the discipline of environmental engineering, and to provide members of the Society with information, training and representation within this field.

Environmental engineering is concerned with the measurement, modelling, control and simulation of all types of environment. It is an interdisciplinary subject, bringing together aspects of mechanical, electrical, electronic, aeronautical, civil, energy and chemical engineering. It also draws from the fields of physics, acoustics, metallurgy, microbiology, pharmacy and many other technical and scientific disciplines.

The SEE was founded in 1959, as a forum for sharing knowledge in this field. Since then, the Society has grown and developed as a focus for activities at local, national and international levels. The membership is as wide-ranging as the subject itself; members come from areas of business and academia, and from all levels within their organisations. The Society is run by its members, together with a full-time professional Secretariat providing co-ordination and administrative support.

As a nationally and internationally recognised professional Society, with a very active membership, the SEE promotes communication and good practice in matters of quality, reliability, and cost effective product development and manufacture. All members can contribute to this activity, and can benefit from increased knowledge which will enhance the work with which they are involved.

SEE Technical Forum

Technical matters are addressed by a single SEE Technical Forum.

The SEE Technical Forum will not address broad areas of interest, but will act as a focus group for particular topics that are currently of interest to members of the Society. Activity in these topics will be undertaken in the most appropriate way (viz focus group meetings, seminars, workshops, web based discussions, visits to sites of interest etc).

Any member with a subject that they wish to pursue through peer discussion may propose this as a new topic and, subject to acceptance of the topic by Council, may take up the role of Topic Leader. Guidelines for Topic Leaders will be developed in due course.

There are major themes that the forum may address and these are Climate, Energy, Education and Environment.

Within these broad themes the focus group could concentrate on specific topics such as the following:-
Process Water in Cleanrooms
Temperature Testing at Low Pressures
Vibration in MEMS
Molecular Contamination in Manufacturing
Energy Considerations in Environmental Testing

In each issue of the Newsletter there will be one or more “Hot Topic”. Background to this topic will be presented and invitations extended for interested members to contact a nominated individual who would take the topic forward within the focus group in the most appropriate way.

If you have any interest in these topics or would like to suggest others, please log your interest with the forum co-ordinator at office@environmental.org.uk

Publications

The Society publishes the quarterly Journal 'Environmental Engineering' which features technical papers on research, development, instrumentation, review articles and other technical news and information. Members also receive a regular Newsletter giving details of forthcoming events, and news of the Society. Other useful publications include the 'Test House Users and Buyers Directory' , as well as reference data, information booklets and proceedings of meetings organised by the Society.

Representation

A key role of the SEE is as a lobbying force representing the professional interests of environmental engineers. The Society provides nominated representatives to a number of national and international committees, such as those concerned with design and test standards.

The Society plays a prominent part in the European forum Confederation of European Environmental Engineering Societies (CEEES).
