The safety and suitability of a rocket motor for service requires proving through trials. These typically comprise firing trials to measure performance parameters such as thrust and pressure and environmental trials to assess such effects as ageing and transport.
All trials involve the use of bespoke instrumentation. The development and maintenance of this instrumentation forms an essential part of the responsibilities. This may range from routine high frequency pressure measurements to more advanced real time x-ray recording.
The responsibilities also include developing and maintaining safety procedures and trials methods, liaising with internal and external customers and producing trials reports.
Candidates should have a formal qualification (HNC, HND or degree) in mechanical engineering or a science based subject.
Ideal candidates will also have some relevant experience and knowledge. This might be in conducting trials themselves or in designing and developing instrumentation. Other relevant knowledge and experience might include:
- Explosive or ballistic trials
- Climatic testing and programming
- Understanding of vibration techniques and systems
- Knowledge of explosive specifications, standards and regulations
- Experience of designing and implementing trials setups
In addition, candidates should have the following general qualities:
- High standard of accuracy, literacy and numeracy
- Experience of data collection, interpretation and report writing
- Good written and verbal communication skills at all levels
- An innovative, flexible and versatile approach to work
- An ability to work to tight deadlines
- Good team working skills
- Self motivated
